In 1999, Nowitzki was a gawky, 20-year-old rookie from Germany, trying to simultaneously acclimate to the United States and save the beleaguered Dallas Mavericks.
He shot poorly, scored infrequently and played so little defense that critics mockingly called him “irk” — as in, no D. Mavericks fans booed him mercilessly. But by 2002, Nowitzki was an All-Star, and by 2007, he was the N.B.A.’s most valuable player.
...
“I think he’s way ahead of my curve,” Nowitzki said of Gallinari. “When I was 20, I was struggling so much. I watched a bunch of games this year, and he looks confident out there. He’s knocking big shots down for them. I think he worked on his drive some, he’s finishing in the paint some, and they’re looking for him to get big baskets. So, definitely ahead of me.”
...
“The biggest thing for those guys is, you’re going to get your block knocked off a lot,” Nelson said. “And you have got to have great resolve. And I think that’s the difference in the guys that make it or not. From what I’ve seen, Gallinari definitely has that. He’s got a huge heart.”

On pace to miss the playoffs for the sixth straight season and on the wrong end of numerous blowout losses in 2009-10, New York (23-43) is coming off one of its most memorable victories in some time. “The do-you-believe-miracles win in Dallas Saturday night begs the next question: Do you believe in rookie Toney Douglas as the Knicks’ point guard of the future?
“Coach Mike D’Antoni did not believe as recently as nine days ago, but now the rookie out of Florida State is the new flavor of the month as the Knicks point-guard carousel goes ’round and ’round.
“He was improving the whole time but you go with your big lineup, you go with gut instincts,” D’Antoni said. “Maybe if I went with him earlier, it wouldn’t have worked out.”

Danny Granger recently told Hoopshype’s Gery Woelfel what he would do if he were Lebron James.
“…Speaking of LeBron, do you think he’ll stay in Cleveland or bolt to New York?
DG: If I was LeBron, I’d go to New York.
Why the Big Apple?
DG: New York is the media mecca as far as endorsements and being able to expand your personnel net worth. The exposure you can get there isn’t only nationally but globally. New York does all that for you…”
